Bench Accounting Alternatives Compared (2026)

Bench sells bookkeeping done for you: a bookkeeper working on Bench’s own platform, monthly financial statements, and business tax filing on its top plan. People looking at alternatives usually have one of three reasons. The December 2024 shutdown shook their confidence, they need accrual-basis books, or they want software to do the bookkeeping. This guide compares the options on those three points.

We make Numbrr, one of the options below, so weigh this page with that in mind. Bench’s strengths are covered below, and Numbrr’s limits are listed in the same format as everyone else’s.

What Bench offers today

On Bench’s pricing page on October 3, 2026, the monthly plans were Bookkeeping Light at $199 (for businesses with up to $250K a year in revenue), Bookkeeping at $399, and Bookkeeping + Tax at $649. Annual billing takes 20% off. Every plan includes a bookkeeper you can reach by phone, message or video, and the top plan adds business tax filing by licensed tax professionals. Prices change, so check Bench’s pricing page before you decide.

What Bench does well

  • A person does the work. Bench trains its bookkeepers in-house, and they prepare your monthly and year-end financials. You review the finished results.
  • Tax filing in the same subscription. Bookkeeping + Tax covers the business return, which removes a handoff between your bookkeeper and a separate preparer.
  • Catch-up work. Bench quotes overdue ("Retro") bookkeeping separately, for months or years of missing books.
  • Your data comes with you. Bench offers Excel exports of your financial documents at any time, and your login stays active after you cancel so you can download completed work.

Where it falls short

  • Cash basis by default. Bench’s FAQ says it works on a modified cash basis by default, with limited accrual adjustments, and offers full accrual bookkeeping as a separate service handled in QuickBooks Online. A company with deferred revenue, annual prepayments or investors who expect accrual statements needs more than the default.
  • The price follows the person. You pay for a bookkeeper’s time every month, whether the month had 40 transactions or 400.
  • The December 2024 shutdown. On December 27, 2024 Bench told customers its platform was immediately inaccessible. Employer.com announced it had acquired Bench on December 30, and service resumed in January 2025. Bench is operating today, and the episode is why many former customers now keep a copy of their books outside any single provider.

Numbrr: software that does the bookkeeping

Numbrr is bookkeeping software built on a double-entry general ledger. You connect your bank and card accounts through Plaid. Numbrr codes each transaction to an account, books what it is confident about, and asks you about the rest in a review queue, one plain-English question per transaction. It produces the profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow statement, and checks every month that they tie to each other. The Numbrr platform tour shows the transactions screen and the reports.

For a Bench customer, the differences are who does the work and which basis the books are on. Every Numbrr plan keeps accrual-basis books. If you want a person involved, the Dedicated Controller add-on ($200/mo, or $2,000/yr with an annual plan) assigns one controller who reviews your books each month, works through anything the AI flagged, checks your monthly reports before they reach you, and handles the move from Bench with you.

What it does well

  • Accrual books on every plan. Numbrr One and Pro add the accrual work itself: invoicing, bills, prepaid expenses, ASC 606 revenue recognition, and fixed assets with automatic depreciation.
  • Catch-up included. Bookkeeping catch-up is included on every plan, so the months before a mid-year switch are covered by your subscription.
  • Priced by expenses, published. Plans are priced by monthly expenses (excluding payroll) and listed on the Numbrr pricing page, from $99/mo on Starter for companies spending up to $25K a month.
  • Closed months stay closed. Once a period is closed, nothing posts into it. Corrections go in as reversals in an open month, which is what an auditor expects to see.

Where it falls down

  • No business tax filing. Numbrr produces the books your tax preparer files from, and e-files 1099s for your contractors. Bench’s top plan files the return itself.
  • Someone answers the questions. Without the Dedicated Controller add-on, a person at your company works through the review queue.
  • No payroll. Run payroll elsewhere. Payroll integration is on Numbrr’s coming-soon list.
  • US and USD only, and no inventory module.

Pilot

Pilot sells two bookkeeping plans with very different shapes. Essentials ($99/mo on October 3, 2026, for up to $100K in monthly expenses) is AI-only, cash-basis bookkeeping on a standard chart of accounts. Core adds a US-based bookkeeper, cash or accrual basis, bill management and a custom chart of accounts; its price was not shown on the pricing page when we checked. Tax filing is an add-on, from $1,000 a year for a single-member LLC and $2,450 for a C-corp.

  • Strength: a path to a person. Core puts a US-based bookkeeper on the account, and Custom adds payroll administration and CFO work.
  • Strength: tax and CFO services from the same company, with prices on its site.
  • Weakness: Essentials is cash basis only, on a standard chart of accounts.
  • Weakness: the bookkeeper tier is priced by conversation. You need to talk to Pilot to learn what Core costs.

Best for: a venture-backed company that wants a bookkeeper, tax filing and eventually a CFO from one firm. Our Pilot alternatives guide goes further.

Digits

Digits is AI bookkeeping software. On October 3, 2026 its plans were Essentials at $65/mo and Core at $100/mo, with a $250/mo Pro plan marked coming soon. Every plan includes invoicing and bill pay, and Core adds department and location tracking and automated schedules. Each business entity is a separate subscription, there is a 30-day free trial, and Digits does not file taxes.

  • Strength: the lowest software price here, with cash or accrual accounting.
  • Strength: invoicing and bill pay on every plan.
  • Weakness: no bookkeeper in the plan. Digits prepares books for your tax preparer or a partner accounting firm; if you want a person, you find one.
  • Weakness: budget vs. actuals and custom reports wait on Pro, which was marked coming soon.

Best for: a founder comfortable owning the books in software who wants the lowest monthly price. More in our Digits alternatives guide.

A local bookkeeper

The closest arrangement to Bench without Bench: a bookkeeper or small firm working in a QuickBooks Online file that you own. Owning the file answers the continuity question directly, and almost any US accountant can open it. The cost is the bookkeeper’s time on top of the QuickBooks subscription, commonly $500 to $1,500 a month for a small business, and the quality depends on who you hire. Our QuickBooks alternatives guide covers the software side.

Digits Essentials.

Moving from Bench without losing a month

  1. 1

    Export everything

Download the Excel exports and year-end financial package for every year Bench kept your books, and store them with your bank statements.

  2. 2

    Pick the cutover date

Use the first day of a month. Months Bench finished stay as Bench reported them; your new provider takes over from the cutover, or rebuilds the current year from bank data if Bench’s last months are incomplete.

  3. 3

    Carry over the opening balances

Your new books start from Bench’s balance sheet at the cutover date: cash, receivables, payables, fixed assets, loans and equity. Ask for the trial balance at that date as well as the statements.

  4. 4

    Line up the tax return

If Bench filed your business return, have a preparer in place well before the next deadline, and give them the year-end package.
